The Brain-Body Institute (BBI) was founded in 2001 as a new key research initiative at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, in partnership with McMaster University.
It came together as a result of several multimillion dollar awards from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the Ontario Innovation Trust (OIT), the Ontario Research Development Challenge Fund (ORDCF), St. Joseph’s Healthcare and its Foundation. Significant matching funds to these contributions came from the private sector.
These funds have supported the construction and equipping of a large modern laboratory facility in the new Juravinski Innovation Centre and the initiation of an Imaging Research Centre housing a functional 3T MRI and PET-CT.
The five-year ORDCF Award totalling $13 million has allowed the BBI to appoint 8 new scientists to our core membership, and initiate support for their research teams including key senior technologists, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students.
