mission

To link clinical and basic scientists from diverse backgrounds to explore how the brain and nervous system interact with bodily systems in the regulation of health and disease.



aims:

To determine to what extent the brain and the rest of the nervous system are involved in the onset and regulation of diseases of the brain, the lung and the intestine. Tied to this main objective, the Institute aims to:

  • unite basic and clinical scientists from diverse backgrounds and foster collaborations locally, regionally, nationally and internationally
  • conduct and translate research to improve the health and healthcare of the population
  • train the next generation of research leaders and provide them with the culture, intellectual stimulation and opportunity to significantly influence the future of science and health care
  • foster relationships with relevant private sector partners such as the pharmaceutical and imaging industries

BBI will have a substantial impact on our understanding of
the brain-body mechanisms that are involved in a number of common illnesses such as depression, asthma and irritable bowel syndrome, all of whose prevalence is increasing.
